Exploring the humanities and social sciences through the breadth requirements
All engineering curricula have at least eighteen credits set aside for breadth requirement courses. These courses are chosen from an extensive list that categorizes courses as either humanities or social sciences. This list is provided to the students and is also available on the web at: http://www.engr.udel.edu/advise/breadth_req.html. In order to provide both breadth and depth, the students are required to complete courses from both categories, and at least two of the courses must be above the introductory level. Students entering with Advanced Placement (AP) credits may already have completed several of these courses.
Exploring other subjects through minors
A minor is a small set of courses in a particular subject area that is different from a student’s major. Minors normally require five to seven courses to be completed in their subject areas. Because a student may double-count courses for credit against both majors and minors, it is often possible to complete a minor by doing no additional work if a student chooses his or her elective courses carefully. Accordingly, about half of all engineering students have at least one minor, and many have two or three minors. For example, some of the most popular minors for environmental engineering majors are the following:
- Chemistry
- Mathematics
- Civil Engineering
- Materials Science
- Nanoscale Materials
- Sustainable Energy Technology
- Physics
- Economics
- Foreign Languages
