In Memoriam -
John R. Zimmerman

John Richard Zimmerman, Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Delaware, died on April 28, 2006, at his home in Newark, DE.  He was 80 years old.  Zimmerman received his Bachelor of Engineering from Yale University, his Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree from Boston University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Lehigh University.  He joined the UD-ME faculty in 1976 and retired in 1988.  Zimmerman is credited with establishing the Senior Design Program at the University of Delaware, in which students were hired to design projects for actual clients, providing them with the real-world experience of engineering.  He published Elementary Kinematics of Mechanisms in 1962, Machine Design Fundamentals with co-authors in 1983, and a chapter on “Brakes and Clutches” in Handbook of Machine Design, which won a prize for best technical book in 1986.
