University of Delaware (Newark Campus)

Course Description This course was specially designed, drawing on the experience and expertise of numerous corporate and public agency project managers (most notably Duffield, DelDOT and DNREC). Not built around any particular software, it also does not presume software expertise, nor does it instruct in the use of software. Instead, it prepares YOU to use software tools to their proper advantage. The instructors caution against the misuse or inappropriate use of software while suggesting the potential benefits software can provide.

In this course you will learn how to prepare a project plan from inception to completion and monitor it.  You will: identify project objectives, clarify scope of the project, and break the project down to manageable components; learn project scheduling and control techniques, manage scarce resources available to the managers, and develop cost estimates; expand your knowledge of optimal utilization and allocation of resources and reduce the project life cycle costs; learn how to monitor the progress and performance of the project; and be involved in forecasting and decision-making.  In addition you will be exposed to soft skills necessary for successful project completion.

NOTE:  The “novice” and “experienced” level classes will both cover the essential components of good project management.  The difference will be the depth to which these components are explored and the complexity of the workshop exercises in which you will be engaged during your class.

Why is this course so important for civil engineers? Ray Harbeson (formerly DelDOT's Chief Engineer and now a consultant with RK&K) shared his thoughts for the development of this course: One disturbing trend I notice is the overuse of the computer in managing a project.....many project managers spend a large amount of time inputting data instead of resolving issues on their projects. They have very good records now on why things are late or over budget, but no time to get things on track when unexpected issues derail the original plan.

The Presenters

Guy F. Marcozzi, P.E., is Vice President and Director of Project Management for Duffield Associates, Inc., a geosciences consulting firm. He holds both the bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from UD, concentrating in geotechnical/structural engineering. His more than 20 years of experience have included land development, transportation, site design, geotechnical and structural evaluations, with emphasis on effective incorporation of existing site features into each project. He has managed the full range of Duffield Associates construction phase services, ranging from testing services to resident project representation to turn-key design build projects. Guy formerly served as head of Duffield's Construction Services, Geotechnical and Water Resources Groups. In 2000, he was selected as the Delaware Engineering Society's Young Engineer of the Year.

Mohammed A. Majeed, PhD, P.E., is an Environmental Engineer with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources & Environmental Control (DNREC).  He served four years as Environmental Engineer/Manager/Researcher for Mitsubishi Materials and its subsidiaries before doing post-doctoral research at the University of Delaware and then assuming his current position with DNREC.  Some of his notable project management experiences include being Project Leader and Principal Author of not only the “The Delaware Phase II Attainment Demonstration for the Philadelphia-Wilmington-Trenton Ozone Non-attainment Area,” but also Delaware’s State Implementation Plans (SIP) addressing the rate-of-progress for Kent and New Castle Counties.  Majeed holds a BS in mechanical engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in India, as well as the MS and PhD in mechanical engineering, both from Kyushu University in Japan.
